Why We Use Glass Jars and Home-Compostable Pouches Instead of Plastic: A Commitment to Purity, Durability, and Sustainability

At MK Supplements, our commitment to purity and sustainability has guided every decision from our very first batch. On Day 1 of operations, we chose to use glass jars with metal lids to protect our products, and we’ve continuously refined our packaging over time, eliminating plastic neckwraps in favor of under-the-lid seals and replacing plastic measuring scoops with stainless steel alternatives.

More recently, we introduced home-compostable pouches to complement our glass offerings. Although these choices carry higher sourcing and shipping costs, they reflect the values we uphold as a family-owned business that prioritizes the health of our customers and environment.

Minimizing Microplastic Contamination

Plastic packaging wears down over time, releasing tiny particles known as microplastics. These fragments, often smaller than 5 millimeters, can originate from surface abrasion or degradation under heat and sunlight.

Research suggests that particles under 150 micrometers may pass through the gut lining into the bloodstream (see Wright & Kelly, 2017), where they can travel throughout the body.

In the environment, microplastics also pick up pollutants — heavy metals like lead and cadmium, or persistent organic compounds such as PCBs — that can detach inside the digestive tract (Teuten et al., 2009).

Laboratory studies further show these particles can trigger localized inflammation in gut tissue, releasing cytokines and oxidative stress markers (Schwabl et al., 2019). By using inert glass packaging and stainless steel scoops — which don’t flex, degrade, or shed particles — we eliminate any risk of microplastic contamination, ensuring your supplements stay as clean as the ingredients within.

Avoiding Xenoestrogens and Other Endocrine Disruptors

Conventional plastics often contain additives (such as BPA, BPS and phthalates) that behave like xenoestrogens, binding to the body’s estrogen receptors and potentially altering gene expression in hormone-sensitive tissues (Rochester, 2013).

Animal studies also show early-life exposure to these compounds can affect reproductive development, puberty timing and fertility markers (Vandenberg et al., 2012). Because low-dose and mixture effects make it difficult to define a truly safe exposure threshold (Zoeller et al., 2012), we eliminated all plastic contact points: our metal-capped glass jars feature under-the-lid seals rather than plastic neckwraps, and our scoops (for our powdered products) are stainless steel.

This approach removes potential xenoestrogen sources, letting you focus on the clean, effective nutrition inside.

Reducing Waste and Environmental Impact

When we launched MK Supplements, our goal was to select packaging materials that support an efficient recycling loop and can be recycled repeatedly without loss of quality. Many curbside programs already handle these items, making it easy to keep them in circulation.

Our home-compostable pouches are made from certified plant-based polymers that break down in an ordinary backyard compost bin, returning nutrients to the soil rather than lingering in landfills.

Although glass production and heavier shipping carry a higher initial carbon cost than plastic, the long-term benefits of a closed-loop recycling system and reduced chemical leaching make our approach more sustainable over time.

Preserving Purity and Freshness

Glass jars with airtight metal lids and under-the-lid seals protect our supplements’ delicate nutrients from light, air and moisture — factors that can degrade potency and flavor. Stainless steel scoops prevent any hidden plastic contact, and the premium feel and clear visibility of glass reinforce the quality you expect from MK Supplements.

Final Thoughts

Our dedication to using glass jars, home-compostable pouches, under-the-lid seals and stainless steel scoops reflects more than packaging choices — it embodies our promise of uncompromising quality and genuine sustainability.

Thank you for joining us in fostering cleaner nutrition and a healthier world… one intentionally packaged supplement at a time.
